Watched "The Last Circus" over the holidaze and it was probably the best movie I saw out of the half dozen or so movies I watched during vacation. The ultimate "clowns after midnight" movie. Not for the faint however.

Here is the trailer.

Not too happy with the proportions but charcoal is fun on recycled rough sketch paper. Why does it have to be so hard to sharpen charcoal pencils?

The wife and I have been watching season 2 of Star Wars: Clone Wars. I was skeptical at first, but everything is really well done and I've been really enjoying it.

This piece I've been working on here and there for like a month. It is my first attempt at digital painting, and I have realized that I could keep working on it forever. So I am keeping in the spirit of the blog and posting it a little more sketchy.

Bill Sienkiewicz's Marvel cover for his and Frank Miller's "Elektra Assassin" No. 1 is one of a handful of iconic images I can say made me a cartoonist.

I first encountered it as a kid on a frosty summer morning on Telegraph in the window of Comics and Comix. A friend and I had skipped Strawberry Rec. Camp, and stared at it for hours before the shop opened, with sweaty palms accompanied only by local hobos.

When discussion of Round 14 came about, I couldn't shake the image. Then last night, inspired by the discussion, I came up with my twist.

Back when I as a kid, Sid & Marty Kroft used to have these wonky old seventies shorts (H.R. Puffinstuff and "Land of the Lost" were the two most popular.) One of the shows I remembered was a knock-off of the old 60's Batman show, Electra-Woman and Dyna-Girl. Electra-Woman was the main hero, and Dyna-Girl here was her teen jailbait sidekick!!

(Okay, I confess this is true "Old School" here. Heaven help you if you can remember this, because it means that, like me, you're as old as dirt...!)

Okay, Party People: as the guy who opened his yap and suggested that we do a round on sidekicks, it's up to me to start the ball rolling. My first contribution is one of my all-time favorite literary characters, the incredibly ordinary RON WEASLEY (aka, the guy standing next to the Boy-Who-Lived for 10 years and 7 books!)
This sketch is mostly done in Prismacolor marker and colored pencil, with a touch of Photoshop in the BG. (Bear with me, please; I'm slowly trying to teach myself to work in more traditional coloring media.) Hope you guys dig it!

A sketch from work. Ball point, coffee stain, red pencil and a bit of white out. Thought I would try to pop some white back into the original with the white out, I forgot how difficult it is to control it. tried to apply it with a unfolded paper clip... didn't work out so well, but i do like the effect, also found out that white out will take a coffee stain after it dries, learned something new... Then a few quick color adjustments in photoshop, of course.

We lost a lot this weekend. The students and faculty at SCAD lost an endlessly driven teacher, who loved his students and yet drove them to constantly achieve their best with the no-nonsense style of a taskmaster. Those who knew him lost a kind and generous soul, who never turned his back on people in need, who gave his all for his friends and loved ones. The genre lost true a Sequential Artist, who always kept the Faith, and never gave up.

Me, I lost a brother.

Rest easy, Unclefucker. We'll see each other again.

I remember an office mate...

I first met Jeremy when he started as a part-timer in Sequential Art, he was teaching electronic portfolio or something another like that and I was over in Norris teaching Drawing for Storyboarding at the time. We became office mates when we both shared a desk between Julie and Dove for a couple of quarters. Jeremy had shit everywhere, all the time, books, art, projects and I used to cuss about it constantly as I had only one box of stuff and a laptop. To his credit, Jeremy never apologized for his mess and after a while I realized that it couldn't negate what an awesome and goofy guy he was (and that I had been sharing an office with Larison, overlord to a spectacle of an office mess). Jeremy, I'd see you time to time and chat, the students we shared sung your praises to me and know I'd much rather be looking at that desk, cussing about it than writing this post. I hope this finds you at peace and among the many great artist who have already left us.
