Special Bonus Round: Covers

Today I was featured on Covered!

Orginal by Frank Thomas (1942)
This comic was found by my Uncle in a wall of an old building. It is the oldest comic I own.
Here is my "cover."

Armed to the teeth (stencil)

Hoping to make this a stencil soon. I vectorized an image of Asia Argento but I traced the paths by hand. No live trace here.

Hope no one is upset by the vector art. Just trying out some new things and trying to get faster with the pen tool. Not technically a sketch . . . but I thought it fit with the theme.

Frag! A Bonus Round!!

My cover of Simon Bisley's comic cover. Think I missed the point of this round, since I didn't change much from the original. Still fun though, and I have been out of the loop far too long.

Round Fourteen: Armed to the Teeth

Bill Sienkiewicz's Marvel cover for his and Frank Miller's "Elektra Assassin" No. 1 is one of a handful of iconic images I can say made me a cartoonist.

I first encountered it as a kid on a frosty summer morning on Telegraph in the window of Comics and Comix. A friend and I had skipped Strawberry Rec. Camp, and stared at it for hours before the shop opened, with sweaty palms accompanied only by local hobos.

When discussion of Round 14 came about, I couldn't shake the image. Then last night, inspired by the discussion, I came up with my twist.

Enjoy,

Ben C.

Special Bonus Round: Covers

Cover by Ben Cohen

In this round we are asking contributors to do the unthinkable...finished work. Wait, isn't Sketchy Scribbles just for our doodles?

Original by Erik Larsen for DC Comics

Well...it's more then that, and in this case you can illustrate either an Album or Book Cover (i.e. Music, Comics, ect...).

Cover by Ben Cohen

Covering a piece of someone's art is not entirely original, nor is the fun play on words with covering a cover, not a song. This, of course, has become very popular with sites like Covered.

Original by John Byrne for Marvel Comics

But we have no guidelines here at Sketch Scribbles, so if you plan on submitting their too, check their rules first.

Well, just two rules, have fun and do good work.

Round 13: Captain Lou Albano

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lou_Albano

No school like the old school.

"one of the most important figures when it comes to the growth and popularity of pro wrestling in the Northeast."

A.K.A. Super Mario, Cyndi Lauper's Dad, That guy with the rubber bands in his face.

He'll bite your knee caps off!

Messing around at work again. Believe it or not I do work hard at the day job. I'll work on these through out the day, five minutes here, five minutes there, until it either looks awesome or like a sloppy piece of crap. I don't show the crappy ones BTW, they get tossed in the trash.

It's true...it's DAMN true...

....I did this one with just a plain old Col-erase pencil on printer paper...

Viva Lucha!!!

Just used Photoshop on this quick one, thanks again grey for letting me be a part of this, i very much enjoy it can't wait for future ones.

Round 13: Wrrrrrrrrrrrestlers!!

Hey everybody! So I finally got around here to rockin' off Round 13 - my personal choice of wrestlers! I'm hoping to kick in more than just one cause I love me some wrestling! Anyways, here's the first shot!

Round Twelve: SIDEKICKS... Dyna-Girl!!!

I won't be surprised if people have to look this up on Wiki and Youtube...

Back when I as a kid, Sid & Marty Kroft used to have these wonky old seventies shorts (H.R. Puffinstuff and "Land of the Lost" were the two most popular.) One of the shows I remembered was a knock-off of the old 60's Batman show, Electra-Woman and Dyna-Girl. Electra-Woman was the main hero, and Dyna-Girl here was her teen jailbait sidekick!!

(Okay, I confess this is true "Old School" here. Heaven help you if you can remember this, because it means that, like me, you're as old as dirt...!)

The Demon 2

Messing around some more, Gene sure is fun to draw!

KISS me baby!

I know the Demon is a star in his own right but, I always considered bass players more like sidekicks to the lead singer and lead guitarists.

Round Twelve: SIDEKICKS... Weasley Style!!!

Okay, Party People: as the guy who opened his yap and suggested that we do a round on sidekicks, it's up to me to start the ball rolling. My first contribution is one of my all-time favorite literary characters, the incredibly ordinary RON WEASLEY (aka, the guy standing next to the Boy-Who-Lived for 10 years and 7 books!)
This sketch is mostly done in Prismacolor marker and colored pencil, with a touch of Photoshop in the BG. (Bear with me, please; I'm slowly trying to teach myself to work in more traditional coloring media.) Hope you guys dig it!

Round Eleven - Giant Robot Dragon

So . . . um . . . I spent WAAAAYY too much time with the gradient tool in photoshop today.

Round 11: ROBOTS!

So hey! Long time no post! Feels good to be back, and here's my entry for the 11th round of our awesomeness: Robots! I had to go a little post apocalyptic here... lots of Japanese influence. I was reading Pluto and thinking of Genesis Climber Mospeida (Robotech: The New Generation) when I did this piece. I hope to color it someday soon!

Round Ten: Demon Lord

A very bored Demon Lord, sitting on his throne and scratching in-between his horns with his pointed tail. I went with most fearsome tattoos imaginable for a demon lord--Baroque filigree!

Sorry it took so long to get this up, but I figured I owed you guys some diversity in Round 10. ;)

Round Eleven - Giant Robot Dragon (and Round Four)

This is a rough robot I plan on adding some color to at some point. Also a flashback to an earlier round with Mary Prankster. I don't know if Mary makes the best poster child for excess but her big breakthrough hit was called "Tits and Whiskey".

Round Eleven: Robo-Hodge-Podge!!

Robots? I can do robots. (Okay, this one kinda just shot out of my head, and now I'm wondering if I've seen too many robots in my life. Now it looks like a hodge-podge of every Robotech Mech I've ever seen, Marvin from the "Hitchhiker's Guide" movie, and a dash of C3p0.) Hope you guys like it; I ruined a corncob pipe while I was doodlin' this rascal...

A sketch from work. Ball point, coffee stain, red pencil and a bit of white out. Thought I would try to pop some white back into the original with the white out, I forgot how difficult it is to control it. tried to apply it with a unfolded paper clip... didn't work out so well, but i do like the effect, also found out that white out will take a coffee stain after it dries, learned something new... Then a few quick color adjustments in photoshop, of course.
